Metrocrest Hospital Authority to Sponsor
Happy Holidays Luncheon
Metrocrest Hospital Authority
The Metrocrest Hospital Authority
(MHA) was created in December 1975 by the City of
Farmers Branch under the guidelines of the Texas
Hospital Authority Act, Article 4437e of Vernon's
Annotated Civil Statutes. Originally known as the
Farmers Branch Hospital Authority, the name was changed
as the service area grew to include Carrollton, Coppell,
Addison, and The Colony.
The Board of Directors consists of 10
voting members, each serving a two year term. Directors
do not receive compensation for their services. All
meetings of the Board of Directors are open to the
public.
MHA owns two hospitals, RHD Memorial
Medical Center in Farmers Branch and Trinity Medical in
Carrollton, which are operated by Hospital Partners of
America. The Authority also owns 9 medical office
buildings and one outpatient radiology center.
MHA operates solely on revenues received
from its leases and receives no revenue from taxes.
The Authority offers college
scholarships for Metrocrest area students graduating
from both public and private high schools. The funds are
for students pursing a degree in a healthcare related
field. During the 2006-2007 academic years, ten
(10) students are attending medical school and six (6)
students were enrolled in nursing
programs.
Recognized by the Carrollton-Farmers
Branch School District for its contribution, the
Authority has presented over $1,000,000 in scholarships
to high school students over the past 17
years. |

Economic Development Committee
Update
2007 Economic Census
In December, more
than 4 million American businesses will receive the 2007
economic census forms, including 43,000 businesses in
Dallas County, underscoring the importance of their
participation in the nation's most comprehensive measure
of business and industry taken every five years.
The Census Bureau
has launched a new website http://www.business.census.gov to help
businesses understand the economic census and how it
benefits them. The site includes economic snapshots of
selected industries and significant facts about every
industry.

Education Committee Update
by Joel Lebsack, C-FB ISD
The
annual Farmers Branch Chamber of Commerce Student
Recognition Luncheon was held November 16th
at Brookhaven Country Club. This luncheon
honors 240 students from R.L.Turner
High
School,
Early
College
High
School,
Texans
Can
Academy,
and Mary
Grimes
Education
Center. The students are
chosen by their counselors based on several criteria
including leadership skills and grades.
Every
student attending the luncheon received a tote bag which
contained a $2500 scholarship to Dallas
Christian
College,
congratulatory letters from State Representative Jim
Jackson and Congressman Kenny Marchant, and an
informational brochure from Brookhaven
College. In addition,
every student attending the luncheon had the opportunity
to participate in an essay contest. Prior to the
luncheon, five essay finalists were chosen from the
original entries.
Four of the finalists received gift certificates
to Best Buy, and the grand prize winner received a
laptop computer, donated by Shamrock Bolt & Screw
and University Computer. The five
finalists were Jonathan Rodriguez, James Wahawisan,
James Stewart, Lily Travis, and Mehreen Charania. James
Stewart won the grand prize laptop computer!
Dr.
Wright Lassiter, Chancellor of the Dallas County
Community College District was the guest speaker. Dr. Lassiter has
been involved with the Dallas Community College District
since 1986 when he was named president of El
Centro College. He is also a
member of the National Advisory Council to the National
Endowment for the Humanities. Dr. Annette
Griffin,
Superintendent of the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD,
Julia
Marzette
from IBM, and Dr. Sharon Blackman, President of
Brookhaven College, also addressed the
students.
The
Chamber would like to thank the many sponsors that make
the Student Recognition Luncheon possible. IBM is the Title
Sponsor of Education, and Brookhaven
College
was the sponsor for this particular event. The essay
contest sponsors were Shamrock Bolt and Screw, Inc.,
University Computer, and the Farmers Branch Chamber of
Commerce. The tote bag
sponsors were the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD,
Dallas
Christian
College,
and Brookhaven
College,
and the photography and counselor gifts were provided by
Pendleton Portrait Design. In addition, we would like to
thank the many individuals and businesses that sponsored
students.
The
Student Recognition Luncheon is a very special event for
these students.
Not only do the students have the opportunity to
be honored for their accomplishments, they also have the
chance to meet and talk to a number of business and
community leaders.
Hopefully, the luncheon will help the students
realize the importance of continuing their education
well past high school.
