Chairman's
Message
Richard Brown, Chairman
of the Board
Dear
Melissa,
What a
privilege to be your Chairman for the Farmers Branch
Chamber of Commerce in 2008. Last year, under the
leadership of Jeanne Hooker, was a very successful year
in many important areas and programs for our members.
Since joining this Chamber in 1989, I continue to be
amazed by the quality of work programs, the dedicated
Directors and volunteers that contributed many hours to
achieve the committee objectives under their program of
work.
Talk about
the importance of volunteers, I encourage you to become
an active part of a committee, maybe serve on one of our
special events, attend Branch Out, our weekly networking
event, or a business seminar. Each monthly luncheon has
a special purpose and theme. This is another excellent
opportunity for networking your business or
organization.
Our January
special event will be the State of the City Address.
Mayor Bob Phelps will bring us the annual message from
the City of Farmers
Branch. It will be
held in a dinner format on Thursday, January
31st. We continue to enjoy a close working
relationship with the City of Farmers
Branch. Both Mayor
Bob Phelps and City Manager Gary Greer are members of
the Board of Directors in 2008. We hope you will plan to
attend to meet these and other City
officials.
Let's make
2008 the most successful year in our Chamber History.
Great things are happening in Farmers
Branch.
Sincerely,
Richard
Brown
Chairman
of the

Education Committee Update
by Joel Lebsack, C-FB ISD
Texas Scholars Program
The Texas Scholars
Program is an event where business leaders speak with
8th grade students in the Carrollton-Farmers
Branch ISD.
The intent of the program is to explain the
importance of staying in school and completing the
Recommended High School Diploma. The
presentations last about 45 minutes, and are conducted
in January just prior to the date when the
8th graders complete their high school
four-year academic plans and choose their freshman year
courses.
The dates
and locations of the presentations are as
follows:
-
Charles
Blalack
Middle
School
Wednesday,
January 23, 2008
-
Ted
Polk
Middle
School
Wednesday
January 23, 2008
-

January 24, 2008
-

-
Vivian
Field
Middle
School Friday,
January 25, 2008
-
Barbara
Bush
Middle
School Wednesday,
January 30, 2008
The
presentations will be held throughout the day on those
dates, so you can present when it is most convenient for
you.
Since every
8th grader in the district will have the
chance to listen to the presentation, there is a great
need for participation from the business community. Don't worry
about not being prepared. A training
session will be held on Tuesday,
January 8, 2008 from
9:30
am to
12:00
pm at
Ranchview
High
School
(8401 Valley
Ranch Parkway East,
Irving,
TX 75063). And of course,
lunch will be provided.
This is the
6th year for the Texas Scholars program. Chamber members
have been a key reason for the great success of this
initiative that helps 8th graders transition
from middle school to high school. If you are
interested in participating in the Texas Scholars event,
please contact Paul
Beeler at beelerp@cfbisd.edu.
RLT
Senior Walk Scholarships
The Senior
Walk at R.L.Turner
High
School will be
held on Thursday,
May 22, 2008. Each year, a
number of businesses present scholarships to the
graduating seniors on behalf of their company. If your business
is interested in presenting a scholarship to a R. L.
Turner senior at the Senior Walk next May, please
contact Lara
Orlic at lorlic@fbchamber.com, or (972)
243-8966.
