Chairman's
Message
Richard Brown, Chairman
of the Board
May has been
one of those special months for our Chamber. Our Youth
Leadership Class of 20 students graduated at our May
9th luncheon at Brookhaven Country Club.
Their next year as Seniors at R.L.Turner
High
School will be
even more successful thanks to the team building
leadership skills learned this past
year.
At our May
luncheon we honored Mayor Bob Phelps for his many years
of dedication to the Farmers
Branch community.
At his last official Chamber function as Mayor, State
Representative Jim Jackson read a proclamation and
presented a Texas flag that
flew over the Capital in Austin. A gift
basket was also given to Dee and Bob as
our appreciation for his great leadership. We wish both
of you the very best on your cruise and years
ahead.
Our June luncheon will feature Brian
Hocker from KXAS-TV,Channel 5 talking about the digital
television transition that will happen in 2009. We are
seeing the commercials and announcements that our
television sets may not work next year. This will be a
very informative program that every member should plan
to attend. It will be held at the Holiday Inn Select
North Dallas.
Finally, our annual Golf Tournament is
planned for Monday, August 25th at Brookhaven
Country Club. Your business or organization has lots of
opportunities to take part from sponsorship levels, to
hole sponsors and prizes. Participate when you are
contacted and let's make this our most successful golf
tournament ever.
Sincerely,
Richard
Brown
Chairman
of the

Digital TV: Are You Ready?
Brian Hocker, NBC 5/KXAS-TV
For over 60 years local television stations have
transmitted an analog signal to viewers, but now the
federal government has mandated that stations turn off
their analog signals on February 17, 2009. Stations will
continue to transmit signals digitally, but will you be
prepared to receive them?
Join us on June 13 as Brian Hocker,
Vice President, Digital Media, Programming and Research,
NBC 5, shares information about what the government has
mandated, who is at risk and how the many issues
surrounding the transition to digital are being
addressed.

Youth Leadership
Graduation
On May 9th, the Farmers Branch Chamber
of Commerce held their annual Leadership Graduation
Luncheon.
The two highlights of the luncheon were the
Mayors' Scholarship presentation and the graduation of
this year's Youth Leadership class.
Since 1991,
Town North Bank has awarded the Mayors' Scholarship to
Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD seniors in honor of the
mayors of Farmers
Branch and
Carrollton. Through this
scholarship program, Town North Bank has awarded over
$251,000 to 84 students. At the luncheon,
Ms. Cinda Bowers from Town North Bank and Farmers Branch
Mayor Bob Phelps presented the R. L. Turner scholarships
to a pair of students from the class of 2008.
The 2008 R.
L. Turner recipients are Elmer Herrera and Taylor
Rahm. Elmer
has been accepted at the University of Texas-Arlington,
and he plans on majoring in architecture. Taylor has been
accepted at Louisiana St. University and will major in
chemical engineering. Congratulations
to these students; and thanks to Town North Bank for
their continuing generosity.
The other
luncheon highlight was the graduation of the 20 students
who are participating in this year's Youth Leadership
class.
Since 1996, the Farmers Branch Chamber of
Commerce has sponsored a Youth Leadership program for 20
selected juniors from R.L.TurnerHigh
School. The program is
completely underwritten by IBM, so there is no charge to
the students.
The students
have been involved in a variety of activities beginning
with a ropes team-building activity in October, and
culminating with a trip to Austin for State
Government Day in April. The adult
sponsors of the group are Jo Gillen from the
Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, and Lara Orlic is the
group's Chamber liaison. The members of
the Youth Leadership Class for 2007-08 are: Zahra Ali,
Michael Bortnyck, Deborah Burgos, Preston Cale, Mehreen
Charania, Derek Chui, Caroline Claiborne, Natalie
Contreras, Kyle Cook, Charuta Gavankar, Hussain Lalanie,
Mercedes Matute, Phuong Nguyen, Sol-JeePark, Stephanie
Rios, Rabab Surani, Renee Tran, Elizabeth Travis, Andre
Walker, and Turkessa Whitten. We thank these
students for their commitment to becoming leaders, and
congratulations on their completion of the
program. |
