Chairman's
Message
Jeanne Hooker, Chairman
of the Board
August has
been a busy month for the Chamber. The Branch Out
Networking Group has been On the Road,
traveling to different member locations for spotlight
presentations and networking. Beginning September 5th we
meet back at Brookhaven Country Club.
At the August General Membership Luncheon , Linda
Bailey, Texas State Securities Board, gave a wonderful
presentation on investment scams. Reliant Energy
discussed their Compact with Texas Pledge Drive and gave
out several energy saving light bulbs. In addition,
Cinda Bowers, Town North Bank was awarded the Early Bird
Award as part of our membership recruitment effort.
Congratulations Cinda!
The Golf Classic was a huge success! A sincere
thank you goes out to all of our sponsors, contributors,
golf committee, volunteers and staff who contributed to
this event's success. I also want to thank State
Representative Jim Jackson and Brookhaven Country Club
for their support.
The State of Education Luncheon will be held
Friday, September 14th at Brookhaven Country Club. This
year's event will feature Dr. Annette Griffin, C-FB ISD
Superintendent, sharing the state of public education
and the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD. I look forward to
seeing you there!
Sincerely,
Jeanne Hooker, Chairman of the
Board

the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School
District (C-FB ISD) is providing a child-centered
educational program. The system prides itself on the
first-rate quality of its schools. An integral part of
the dynamic, fast-growing Metrocrest, the district
provides classrooms where teachers can teach and
children can learn. For more information please visit

State of
Education Luncheon
Carrollton-Farmers
Branch Independent School District encompasses 53.42
square miles and is located primarily in northwest
Dallas County with a smaller portion in southeast Denton
County. The school district's boundaries are not the
same as municipal boundaries; therefore, C-FB ISD
provides instructional services to children who live in
portions of Carrollton, Farmers Branch, Addison,
Coppell, Dallas, and
Irving.
C-FB ISD
believes community involvement, parental support,
dedicated staff members, and personalized instruction
contribute to making our schools premiere learning
environments. A diversified curriculum is available
because the district's officials realize the importance
of tailoring instruction to meet all students' individual needs. Offerings
include gifted education, fine arts, special education,
dual college credit classes, online classes, English as
a Second Language, vocational education, computer
technology, Bilingual education, business education, and
advanced placement courses. Students may also
participate in a number of co-curricular activities and
athletics.
As a
result of a rigorous and relevant curriculum, the
district's average SAT score continues to be higher than
the state and national averages. The average SAT score
in C-FB ISD is 1045. The average SAT score in Texas is
993 and the average national SAT score is 1026.
In 1997, the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD
Board of Trustees selected Dr. Annette Griffin for
Superintendent of Schools. The current
seven-member Board of Trustees is lead by Board
President Mr. John Tepper, Board Vice President Mrs.
Lynn Chaffin, Board Secretary Mr. James Goode, and Board
Assistant Secretary, Mrs. Nancy Cline. Rounding out the
Board membership are Mr. Howard Fisher, Mr. Frank Shor
and Mrs. Nancy Watten.

Education Committee Update
by Mary Jane Stevenson, City of Farmers
Branch
The CFBISD's EarlyCollegeHigh
School on the
BrookhavenCollege campus is
entering its second year of operation. Established
primarily for students who are the first generation in
their families to go to college, the students who attend
the ECHS will have 42 core hours of college work and
perhaps an associate's degree upon their
graduation.
Staff at the ECHS are looking for "champions"
from the business and civic communities to help them
with upcoming activities. If you can help,
please contact Denise Davis at 940.369.7816
.
Fifteen new
businesses have been added to the popular Academic Honor
Card and Applause Card. The Academic
Honor Card was started in 1987 by the Farmers Branch
Chamber of Commerce and is a card issued to students who
maintain a "B" grade point average during the previous
semester.
The card entitles the qualifying student to
discounts and benefits at area businesses. The Applause
Card gives educators and staff a ten percent discount at
local shops and restaurants. Participating
businesses are not charged to be part of either card
program and reap the rewards of greater patronage and
widespread advertising in the community. Approximately
17,000 cards are distributed to students 4,000 to
teachers and staff. Contact Michelle
Capener at 469-287-2461at the CFBISD if you want to get
in on this great avenue to market your business while
recognizing deserving students and
educators!
